Request for information flow:
Shoreline Community College
Project type: UX writing for a Request for information flow.
About Shoreline Community College: Like many government-owned entities, Shoreline Community College is behind the curve when it comes to best practices for websites and UX. They struggle with a legacy website architecture that’s unnecessarily complex and repetitive, a “more is more” philosophy when it comes to copy, and a committee’s worth of stakeholders specializing in education rather than user experience.
In 2017, the college began a website redesign project that took several years. While my team was able to make a lot of improvements, the solutions we landed on aren’t perfect. Some decisions just weren’t ours to make.
Audience: Prospective and new users. The college serves a breadth of users of all abilities.
Activities: User research, journey mapping, prototyping, presentations of findings, advocating for users.
Team: Director of web strategy, web assistant, freelance developer, and myself. We worked collaboratively with cross-functional teams of stakeholders to integrate business needs with usability.
My contribution: I wrote all the strings on the after pages. I participated in user research and, throughout the process of revamping this flow, I advocated for the user in an environment that hasn’t made user experience a priority. I helped present findings and prototypes to stakeholders.
